Booking a GP Appointment Online

The NHS App lets you look after many of your health needs from home — booking appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions, and viewing your records — without waiting on the phone. It is free, official, and secure. This guide helps you get set up and shows you what you can do.

What you can do with it

• Request or book GP appointments.
• Order your repeat prescriptions and choose where to collect them.
• View your health record, test results, and the medicines you take.
• Get advice and message your surgery.

What you’ll need

• A phone or tablet connected to the internet.
• Some form of photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, to prove who you are (this is only needed once, during setup).

Getting set up

1. Open the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (Android), search for NHS App, and install it. Look for the official one from the NHS.
2. Open the app and select Continue with NHS login, then register with your email address and a password.
3. You will be asked to prove your identity. This usually means taking a photo of your ID and a short video of your face, so the NHS can be sure it is really you. Take your time — good lighting helps.
4. Once you are verified (it can take a little while to be approved), you are ready to go.

Booking an appointment

1. Open the app and choose Appointments.
2. If your surgery offers online booking, you will see the available times. Pick one that suits you.
3. Confirm the booking. You will get a reminder in the app, and often a text as well.

If no times are showing, your surgery may prefer you to send them a message or phone instead — the app will guide you.

Ordering a repeat prescription

1. Choose Prescriptions from the menu.
2. Tick the medicines you need more of.
3. Send the request. Your GP reviews it, and you can collect it from your chosen pharmacy — some will even deliver.
